An American choreographer and dancer who has been based in France since 2007, Asha Thomas develops multidisciplinary work with the Ima company, based in the Île-de-France region. A graduate of the Juilliard School in New York, she was a principal dancer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre for eight years before collaborating with numerous choreographers in France and internationally, including Raphaëlle Delaunay, Boris Charmatz, Salia Sanou, Léo Lérus and Aina Alegre. Influenced by American modern dance, her artistic style centres on the body’s lines, spirals and chains, balancing stability with fluidity. Her current research lies at the intersection of African-American cultures and diasporic heritages. She is interested in the ways in which memory, rhythms and forms of transmission circulate, transform and persist across different territories.
In residence at the CCNN’s Accueil-Studio programme from 30 November to 4 December, a scheme supported by the Ministry of Culture / DRAC Pays de la Loire.
The residency showcase will take place on 3 December at 7.00 pm at the CCNN, as part of the ‘Jeudi, À l’œuvre’ series.
