Totem (Titre provisoire)

,

With *Totem* (working title), Karim Bouheudjeur continues his exploration of memory, identity, the gaps in history, and the links between France and Algeria. Drawing on personal accounts and family memories, he uses his own history to examine the ways in which colonisation and its legacy are – or are not – recounted. Silences, taboos, missing narratives, but also power dynamics – displaced and transformed over time – which remain at work in our societies. What does history convey when it goes untold? Who dominates, who remains silent, who internalises their place?
Building on *Dust Bowl* (2024), this work-in-progress uses the body as a tool for exploration to understand what is passed on, what fades away, and what is re-enacted. *Totem* (working title) seeks to re-examine history from a different angle and to understand what it continues to produce within us.

As part of the studio residency programme, supported by the Ministry of Culture / DRAC Pays de la Loire.
